John McMinn Building Studio

The project involved transformation of a derelict back lane automotive repair shop and parts storage building to a two-part building, housing a commercial photography studio and a single family residence incorporating a landscaped court. The two parts of the project required distinctly different spatial strategies, with the studio being almost entirely inwardly focused, while the aim of the residence with its external court on the West was to establish a reciprocal pairing between interior and external spaces. The photography studio consists of a foyer lounge, kitchen and bathroom, housed under a steel framed mezzanine. A stair leads up to an open plan office and conference area, overlooking the main studio floor. Materials throughout the two parts of the project are simple, raw and elegant with a palette of polished concrete floor forming a neutral ground to maple millwork and clear lacquered structural steel.
