Shaw Street House #1

(9)

A single-family house renovation with a two-storey rear addition, and expanded living spaces into previously unoccupied basement and third floor areas, creates two 3 bedroom apartments. Key elements of the Toronto Victorian home’s original character were maintained, while bringing an open concept living space to the ground floor, basement and third floor. Insertions of strategically placed clerestory windows bring natural light deep into the central spaces of the building, solving an inherent problem of dark interiors in the long, narrow Victorian house type. A subtle modern palette of natural limestone, glass mosaic tile, along with maple and teak cabinetry is used inside, while the outside cedar decks at ground and third floor levels employ custom steel railings and a grape vine trellis.
